Turkmen are the third largest ethnic group after the Arabs and Kurds in Iraq. Today the Iraqi Turkmen population is estimated at 3.5 million. They may constitute around 13% of the Iraqi population whereas higher percentages have also been proposed.
The main spoken language in Turkmeneli (Turkmen homeland) is the Turkish dialect which is a part of the Western Turkish language group that includes also the Turkish spoken in Turkey, Cyprus, the Balkans.
